As the world progresses every day in this modern age, people are getting more and more conscious about the moral values of the society laid in front of us. And one of the most debated topics is gender inequality. Feminism is on the rise. As people fight everyday forequality of humankind, one aspect is still being overlooked. Patriarchy is the name of the evil.
The alpha-male
Almost all families are headed by a male, they make the rules, they have the final say in most of the decisions made. Every day we hear things like, ‘you are the man of the house’, ‘you’re going to be the head of the family’. This has been bred into the society, Yes, we live in a patriarchal society. We were molded by this society. This face of gender inequality often gets overlooked, because it is in our DNA. And this isn’t just in our country or society, the problem is present across the world.
How much of the world is really developed?
Priyadarshini Bajracharya lives in the US. She was born in Nepal but moved to the US with her family at a young age. She has seen the cultures of both the nations, and feels patriarchy still prevail in most f the developed world as well. “Despite being a first-world country, the United States continues to struggle with patriarchal values. There is still a wage gap between both women and men with women earning 80 cents for every dollar a man makes,” she said. “This gap is more significant due to racial disparities. The work environment in companies are male dominated, and two-thirds of women and three-fourths of black women feel they must prove themselves to their counterparts due to the stereotypical treatment they receive for being female.”
Bishal Tamang, a resident of Geyzing, Sikkim, has lived in a society where women are respected more than in the typical Indian city. But still, gender inequality has the upper hand there. “Here, girls are treated with utmost respect. But still boys are given more preference than girls. Like, boys can hang out with their friends but girls are expected to be back by like 8 or 9. Girls are still bound by more rules. They still are told to be more careful about their approach towards the society and life.”
Third-world countries suffer the most
This issue of patriarchy plays an even worse role in patriarchal third-world countries. Here, women are not allowed to do as they please without permission from their husband or their husband’s family. There is a lack of focus on education for women due to the thinking that men are smarter and better. In both societies, there is an issue with patriarchy which must be overcome as it will form a more equal and harmonious world.
