Minister lays stress on research at BU Convocation

Can students get subject choices based on their aptitude? According to the Union Minister for Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan the new guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 do just that.
“It is a visionary policy and empowers students to learn and explore courses based on talent and interests,” he said, while delivering the keynote address as Chief Guest atBennett University ’s Third Annual Convocation. Pradhan said this policy of the Modi Government will help students do better with credit banks, multiple entry and exit points and other such schemes.
Pradhan was all praise for the way Bennett University is striving to adopt NEP 2020. “I am happy to know that Bennett University is changing its curricula in line with what has been envisioned in NEP 2020,“ he said.
Talking about Bennett University’s research and innovation culture, Pradhan said, "Bennett University has adopted a culture of research and innovation and strives to establish itself as a center of quality education.”
Debjani Ghosh, President, NASSCOM, while delivering the Convocation Address, advised the students to keep pace with the changing technology. “The talent war is getting real by the day; you have to be on your toes to keep up with the latest trends and technology. Otherwise, you will face a tough time to make it to list of worthy competitors in a crowd of millions,” she said.
She wanted the students to keep four points in mind if they want to shine in life. “Always remember these four points: learn to get comfortable with the discomfort; Master the art of Unlearn- Relearn- Learn; Look for the messiest problems as people today look out for problem solvers; and last, but not the least, be kind,” the NASSCOM President said.
Sharing a word of advice and motivation for the graduates, Bennett University Chancellor and MD Times Group,Vineet Jain said, “There is no substitute for hard work, so work hard – even as you soak in the joys of being young. Dream big. Don’t be afraid to experiment, and don’t be disheartened by failure. But be self-aware, learn from your mistakes, and move on."
The Chancellor pointed out that the entire academic year was under the cloud of Covid-19 and Bennett University’s “successful transition to online operations is a testament to the resilience of the entire BU fraternity. These unprecedented times have only re-affirmed the old saying that the only constant is change.” He said the aim of the university was to create men and women who are “future-ready.”
He also urged the Education Minister to incentivize private educational institutions– which have made serious investments in faculty, infrastructure and students – to be a partner in nation-building.
Delivering his annual report on the university, Vice Chancellor Prabhu K. Aggarwal said, “The challenges of moving all teaching / learning online, conduct all university business in virtual mode, ensuring final placements and internships virtually, conducting admissions with varying guidelines from state and central examination boards, and managing to successfully meet our goals defines this unprecedented year at the university.”
The University conferred the Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) on two eminent personalities -- Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw in the field of Bio-Technology and Suresh Narayanan in the field of Management.
Accepting her honorary doctorate,Mazumdar-Shah , Chairperson of Biocon and Biocon Biologicals Limited, said, “Through research-led innovation, I believe, we can power economic development by transforming healthcare, agriculture, livestock management, industrial processing and environmental sustainability.”
In his acceptance speech, Narayanan, Chairman,Nestle India Pvt Limited , spoke of the tough times the world has been facing because of the pandemic. “Remember that in adversity you will learn the most. In good times, everybody can be great. In terrible times, the diamonds shine in the dust,” he said.
As many as of 411 graduating students were conferred their degrees during the Convocation. These included students from theSchool of Engineering and Applied Sciences , School of Management , and Times School of Media . A Ph.D. degree was also awarded.
The evening ended with the award of Chancellor’s and Vice-Chancellor’s medals in different fields and national anthem, sung by students of the University.
