GEORGES SEURAT

VIDHI BHOOTRA

Georges Seurat (1859-1891) was a French post-impressionist painter who is best known for his technique of pointillism, also known as divisionism. He was born in Paris, France and studied art at the Ecole des beaux-Arts in Paris.

Seurat’s style was influenced by the scientific theories of colour and light that were popular during his time. He believed that by placing tiny dots of colour next to each other, he could create the illusion of depth and luminosity in his paintings. This technique is known as pointillism or divisionism.

One of the Seurat’s most famous works is “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” (1884-1886), which depicts a group of Parisians relaxing on the banks of the Seine River. The painting is composed entirely of tiny dost of colour and is considered a masterpiece of pointillism.

Unfortunately, Seurat’s life was cut short at the age of 31 due to an illness. Despite his short career, he had a significant impact on the development of modern art and is remembered as one of the most innovative painters of his time.
