Hydrogen fuel: Is it the future?

By Joy Singhaal

Electric vehicles are becoming popular among consumers because of the government promoting them to reduce the carbon emission from vehicles. But what if you get another kind of zero emission vehicle which are like ICE cars and gives you the same feel as you are driving a normal car and only emits water vapour as it carries you down the road. That’s the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, if we compare them with an EV they are related as they emit zero carbon, but hydrogen cars are different and rarer.

Hydrogen fuel cars are like normal cars. They are also known as H2ICE (hydrogen internal combustion engine) and they run on the most abundant element in the universe, hydrogen. Although a fuel cell car runs on electricity, it does it so differently than battery powered or plug in hybrid cars. In a fuel cell, hydrogen reacts to produce electricity to power the cars. So, the biggest question which arises in the customer minds while buying a electric car which is of charging it will no longer be a issue after the hydrogen fuel cell cars. You will have to fill the car with hydrogen just like normal fuel and it will automatically charge the battery thus reducing the pollution as well as increasing the efficiency.

This technology is still under development in the USA with already 15000 cars are running on roads and three of Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell powered car MIRAI are running on Indian roads. One of them is with the Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Coming to the Indian market, Toyota has recently launched a pilot project to test the Mirai FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle). The Japanese automaker and the Indian government's testing agency, iCAT (International Centre for Automotive Technology), will study and evaluate the hydrogen-powered car for Indian conditions.

Toyota is using a second-gen Toyota Mirai for testing in India. The car's overall design leans towards the conventional vehicle, and it does not look like a spaceship straight out of a fantasy movie, considering it runs on futuristic technology.
