India wishes for Mahi-way 2.0

By Ishita Kapoor

Rohit Sharma has been an amazing captain to the Mumbai Indian franchise. Since 2013 MI has won 5 trophies under his captaincy. Not only IPL (Indian Premier League) he has been a phenomenal captain for Indian team as well.

In 80 games as captain, Rohit Sharma led the Indian team to victories in 62 different forms. He has a 78 percent victory rate because only 11 times has a team defeated India. Sharma defeated the West Indies in 12 games, Sri Lanka in 14, New Zealand in 9, England 4, and Pakistan 3 times.

When Virat Kohli was fired following a disappointing performance at the 2021 T20 World Cup, he was named the team's permanent captain. Sharma, the Indian team's current opener, has served as a thought leader for the blue shirts as well as their most effective skipper in terms of t20 victories.

Still, last season and this year too in their opening game, Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Mumbai Indians, was agitated. He struggled at the plate and then appeared rather frazzled on the pitch as Royal Challengers Bengaluru won easily. Not just the IPL but Rohit has been a bit out of touch in captaincy as after many years Indian team lost a home one-day series to Australia under his captaincy. Not only this India has lost the Asia cup, T20WC, ODI series vs Ban, ODI series vs Australia , ODI defeats by 10 wickets, T20 match loss by 10 wickets.

No doubt one of the best Test captains in the history of cricket is Virat Kohli. He ended his time as India's Test captain statistically speaking as the finest skipper the country has ever had. In 68 matches of Test cricket, Virat Kohli was India's captain. In the longest format, this captain from India has played the most games ever. Around this time, he surpassed MS Dhoni, who captained India in 60 Test matches. Virat Kohli is India's fourth-most successful ODI captain with 65 victories under his belt. Despite these incredible stats, Virat Kohli was unable to lead India to a World Cup victory in 2019. After a sad loss against New Zealand in the semifinals, India was eliminated from the competition. He has not led his IPL team to the trophy either.

Talking about all these rollercoaster stints of captains we ought to recall India's Mr. Consistent, in terms of leadership, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Since his inception as the captain, he led India to be the champions of the world twice and kings of Asia once which for these days captains are like a fairytale. With his cool mindset and witty tactics Mahi carved India's way in test cricket which helped us significantly years after. He even won IPL 4 times, making him the only captain to achieve whatever the cricketing world has to offer.
And therefore, the question remains: can anyone else crack the mahi-way?
