Finding a way to keep a roof above their heads

BY KANAK BHATIA

Aakash was a hardworking and dedicated employee at a local factory, earning enough to support his family. However, one day, he lost his job during Covid-19 lockdown and he spent his entire savings during the lockdown. With no income and no savings, Rahul and his family struggled to meet the ends.

Soon, they were unable to pay their rent and were evicted from their home. With nowhere to go and no one to turn to, Aakash and his family ended up on the streets, homeless and alone.

Aakash and his family faced many challenges, including hunger and the constant fear of violence and abuse. They were forced to scavenge for food and shelter wherever they could find it, often resorting to sleeping in parks, under bridges, or in abandoned buildings.

Days passed and Aakash began to lose hope. He had always been a hardworking and optimistic person, but the constant struggle to survive was taking its toll. His family's health became worse and he felt helpless in the face of their suffering.

And after the days of suffering a group of volunteers from a local homeless NGO approached Aakash and his family, offering them a place to stay and support in finding a job. Firstly, Aakash was hesitant to ask for the help but Aakash eventually accepted the offer, realising that it was the only way to give his family a chance at a better life.

With the help of the NGO’s staff, Aakash was able to find a job and get back on his feet. He and his family moved into a small apartment and started rebuilding their lives.

Aakash's story is not unique. Many people around the world and especiallyfaced homelessness and struggle to survive during Covid. It is important for us as a society to recognise the issue of homelessness and take action to address it, providing support and resources to those in need.
