Jennifer's body: One hell of a life experience

By Nandini Sukhija

When 'Jennifer’s body' is mentioned somewhere, the 2000s kids will probably think about a horror comedy movie based on a feminist cult which stars the well known Megan Fox but for me it actually reminds me of a body of a girl named Jennifer.

Horror movies have always intrigued me and my school friends. From saying 'Bloody Mary' thrice in the mirror with a candle late at night to making an ouija board to call out ghosts, we have done all sorts of things but the myth of hilly areas being eerie and ominous actually came out true for us one night. Watching Child’s Play, The Conjuring, Annabelle, Lights out and even Kanchana ends up being humorous when you’re watching it with your friends even when it is all dark, late at night, wind swishing in Nainital where you’re supposed to be scared like hell but it never was for us.

One night we decided to play “Charlie Charlie” to call out spirits because obviously as heard from our seniors and teachers, a hilly region would have a ton of lost souls, negative spirits roaming around but the game failed yet again so we decided to switch to Hide & Seek at 2 am. We could make as much as chaos as we wanted because the warden was on leave then and there was no one to stop us, no one was there to be a buzz kill.

When playing hide & seek, we always hid in pairs and while looking for a place to hide we found a secret way to our attic from the infirmary which was never there before and decided to go for it. We climbed our way up with torches and candles because nothing was visible. Among our suitcases and trunks that are kept there, there it was. One odd looking very old age, rustic trunk which caught our eye. The glimpse of it was very fascinating, so old but it felt like it was glowing in a different way. My friend and I decided to open it, a bit hard to crack the lock but we did it and inside it we found a whole skeleton all dried up and pungent. The saying “Forbidden Fruits always taste the best” did not really match our situation as it smelled like rotten eggs mixed with human sweat and smoking. That scared us like nothing ever did before. I heard a “ Are you crazy?” From my friend which I decided to get close to it and maybe even touch it because it was just so fascinating but for my friend, we had to leave because she turned out to be the “that” character from a horror movie that runs away first.

We couldn’t even tell our matron about it because if she knew we went to a place no one is supposed to, we might even get suspended and then we decided to close this chapter but just for our friends to believe it we took them again and later came up with a theory relating it to a story we have heard before that even a girl named Jennifer was also playing hide and seek with her friends in her time and she locked herself in a trunk and none of her friends could ever find so she became a caged bird and her life ended.

We labelled the skeleton 'Jennifer' and got one hell of a life experience for sure.
