Roe v/s Wade: Abortion Rights
By: Triveni Mahajan
The Supreme Court of theUnited States overturned the judgment of 1973 case Roe v/s Wade
under which abortion was included in the constitutional right on 24 June 2022.
The reason behind the previous law coming into the limelight was because of the case which
involved aMississippi legislation that banned abortion beyond 15 weeks much before the foetal
viability(24 weeks) which was allowed by the government under the abortion law in 2018. Later
on 19 March 2019 the Republican GovernorPhil Bryant banned the abortion after the foetal
cardiac activity could be detected(about 6 weeks).
After this judgment of overturning Roe v/s Wade judgment was passed it gave power to the
state to decide whether the abortion is legal or not. Till now 12 states have banned the abortion
rights leading to snatching the right to choose from women. This has also impacted the larger
frame work of human rights, tilting it away from the poor and the voice-less. In order to walk on
the path to protect the pro-life movement the states took away the right to choose from women.
