Rupaul’s Drag Race, Not the Car Race!

By Aarushi Bhadhury

Drag race has been a huge part of my life since the pandemic began and I had all the time in the world to explore queer things on the internet and no, I’m not talking about the car drag race I’m sorry, it’s Rupaul’s Drag race: May the best Drag Queen win!

During my endless scrolling through YouTube, (when reels wasn’t a thing) I came across a makeup video tutorial of James Charles, a famous self-proclaimed make up guru, and that’s where my interest in makeup grew. In one of the videos James had collaborated with a Drag queen. I, at that point of time, wasn’t even aware of an art form called Drag. The Drag queen ‘Plastique Tiara’ was transforming James into her makeup look with Drag make up, wig and an outfit while they spoke about Rupaul’s Drag race. That’s how I came to know about the existence of my current obsession, Drag and Drag race.

In the colourful world of creative make up, beautiful colourful sparkly outfits I found my home. People who can shapeshift into a whole new person with the help of wigs and outfits and then showcase their wonderful talents, whether it was singing, dancing, acting or comedy. Drag queens are thought to be just gay men who are cross dressing is so much more than that. It is an art form in itself where people express their art in the form of the makeup style they wear, the outfit style they wear and what they like to perform, people who taught me how to be myself and love myself, that is drag to me.
