Start of Something Beautiful

Season 1 of RuPaul’s Drag Race episode airing was a ground-breaking event for the queer community in US. RuPaul, the name’s sake and main judge of Drag race was a drag queen who modelled and performed across the world and became the ‘Super-model of the World’. He had come to give a platform for all the Drag queens to come and compete for the title of ‘Best Drag Queen’ and the winner of the show with the cash prize of $ 10,000.

Starting with 8 queens entering the ‘Werkroom’, where the contestants will get ready, drag race was here to make a statement. Drag in itself is a protest and an act of activism against societal norms whether it was about one’s sexuality or how one should dress.

All the queens were showcasing different styles if drag and were there to win. The first mini challenge was one of the most iconic moments in Drag Race ‘herstory’ where the queens had to do a photoshoot. Simple right? But there is a twist of course, the queens must do the photoshoot while they are being sprayed with water. Seeing all the queens trying to model while being hosed down with water was entertaining, I must say and showed every queen personality as well. Every challenge and runways would be the best of the best and the lip-syncs to die for. However, this was the first time the show was done so if you compare it with now’s Drag race there are multiple differences, but what remains the same is the love for drag in all the contestants that have showed up. The winner of Season 1 of RuPaul’s Drag race was Cameroon’s very own, Bebe Zahara Benet set the bar for all the coming queens thus ending the first season of RuPaul’s Drag race.
