What Is Spyware Pegasus, Anyway?

By Nitya Handa

In recent years, we've seen the rise of a new type of threat to digital privacy: spyware. Pegasus, a highly sophisticated and stealthy piece of malware has the potential to be used as an espionage tool , is one of the world's most notorious spyware programmes.

Pegasus is the product of an Israeli organisation, which claims that its software is only intended for criminals and terrorists. The reality, however, could be quite different, with possibilities that the software could be used to undermine democratic institutions.

Pegasus infects a target's smartphone by taking advantage of a vulnerability in the operating system or a popular app like WhatsApp or iMessage. When malware is installed, it can record conversations, read emails and text messages, steal photos and videos, and even turn on the device's camera and microphone without the user's knowledge.

Pegasus is particularly dangerous because it is virtually undetectable. The malware operates in the background silently, leaving no visible evidence of its presence. It also communicates with its command-and-control servers using sophisticated encryption techniques, making it difficult for security researchers to track its activities.

The fact that Pegasus could be used outside of authoritarian regimes only serves to worsen the issue. This raises serious concerns about the digital age's balance of security and privacy.

To summarise, spyware such as Pegasus poses a serious threat to digital privacy and human rights. It is critical that governments and the private sector collaborate to develop effective solutions for detecting and neutralising such threats. Individuals can protect themselves at the same time by being vigilant about their digital security, keeping their software up to date, and employing strong passwords and two-factor authentication. Only by working together can we ensure that the benefits of the digital revolution do not outweigh the risks.
