The first day of Deeksharambha or fresher’s orientation included an address by guest speaker Mr Rudra Kasturi, CFO, Times Group. Starting off his speech with a warm welcome to the TSOM freshers, Mr Kasturi spoke of his own love for the media industry and how it has grown over the years.

He further went on to shed light on the rapidly transforming face of media. He stressed on the growing importance of artificial intelligence and its entrance in media. The use of AI in writing stories by decreasing time and increasing efficacy irreplaceable. “It’s of crucial importance these days. We could only write a limited number of stories in a day. With AI we can write any number of stories in little time.”

He further highlighted the workings of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). He said that after an event has happened one needs to write and publish the story as soon as possible. “If there are already 10 other pages that have published a story on that topic, Google even won’t bother indexing the page", he said. He said that this is where AI helps in writing of the story quicker so it can be published faster.

He said that contrary to popular belief, almost 80% of traffic on Times of India web page comes from searches with social media directing the least percentage of traffic. “Since the lion’s share of users come from searches, Google should have a good image of your website, so it ranks the page high”, he said.

Speaking with respect to his own journey, he urged the students to follow the growth hacking cycle which includes analysing, ideation, prioritising, and testing. He said that if one doesn’t analyse and gather insights, and base their testing and prioritise, one will not see success.
