Sources are key in journalism: S & P Editor
“We are a futuristic company which provides a great platform to students interested in the field of commodities,” said Ms Shailaja Nair, Associate Global Editor at S&P Global Platt while talking to Mass Communication students of Bennett University. Nair further explained the working of her company and the job prospects ahead for students of mass media.

Where mass media fits in
S&P Global Platts is a subsidiary of S&P Global and acts as a provider of information and benchmark prices for commodities and energy markets. A few of the major sectors where they play an active part are coal, metals and petrochemicals. “A mass media professional in our organization plays a major role in the news reports and assessments we publish about the market in all sectors,” said Nair. Giving a brief description of the hierarchy in the organization she added one can either work as a market reporter or an editor. Nair, herself, head the Asia Central editing desk.

Skills the industry is looking for

“As editors, we don’t have more than five or ten minutes to proof read a copy before it gets published, so we have to be fast and accurate,” she
said. For market reporters, there greatest assets are their sources. Nair encourages the students to ‘cultivate their sources’ in whichever field of journalism they wish to pursue. She also talked about the importance of Big Data for market reporters.

A normal day for a market reporter

“A typical day in the life of a market reporter starts with talking to traders to get a sense of the market that particular day,” says Nair. From the facts collected, a reporter has to write a relevant story and then also give the assessment of the market for that day. “A typical day ends with the end of day commentaries which give the overview of the markets at the day’s end,” she added.
Nair encouraged the students to look forward to the immense job possibilities in the industry after they finish their studies. S&P Global Platt is also looking to set up a new editorial desk in India.
