Greater Noida: Connecting with students through classrooms, the gymnasium, the sports complex and cultural events is how the newly appointed Dean Student Affairs (DSA) Dr Tanveer Ahmed intends to encourage open dialogue.

“Students come to universities with academics in mind, definitely. However, when staying on campus, they find themselves challenged by aspects beyond academics. As the Dean Student Affairs, I want to create an environment where their voices are heard and valued,” he said.

An Associate Professor with the School of Computer Science and Engineering Technology, Ahmed has a wealth of experience in the domains of machine learning, data analytics and natural language processing. It is his empathy for students and wanting to collaborate with them on projects that makes him the perfect fit for handling the charge of Dean Student Affairs.

“I have envisioned a multi-layer operational model, starting at the school-level up to office of the Dean Student Affairs. The needs of the student community can then be addressed in a systematic manner, depending on the nature of the grievance,” Ahmed said, elaborating on the systematic changes he wishes to implement for facilitating students’ grievance redress.

Alongside making solid reforms, Ahmed plans to redefine the vantage from which the office of the Dean Student Affairs is looked at. He hopes to foster team spirit and, he said, he has a few ideas about them in his playbook.

“Among other measures, I plan to hit the gym and engage in some fitness activities with the athletes. By doing so, I can gain the confidence of the students in an environment they are comfortable in,” he said.

“Slowly, I will engage with the clubs that conduct year-round activities and events on our campus. If given a chance, I would like to learn some dance steps from Rivaaz. Their classical dance performance on Republic Day truly impressed me,” the DSA said.
