Uttarakhand: Rawat stays hopeful for Congress

By KANIKA BISHT

Greater Noida: Congress leader and former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat is confident of winning the state assembly elections this year. “I am confident about the victory of the Congress party in Uttarakhand. Everything will be clear in the next 2-3 hours. I have faith in the people of the state. I believe Congress will get close to 48 seats,” he said.

The Congress veteran is contesting from the Lalkuwa constituency after losing the last three elections in a row. He is currently trailing behind the BJP’s Dr. Mohan Singh Bisht with 14,151 votes at 11.20 am. Dr Bisht has so far garnered 22,762 votes, according to the data available on the Election Commission of India website.

Despite most exit polls predicting a second term for the BJP in Uttarakhand, Rawat remains optimistic stating, “We are winning on most of the seats and there is a close contest where we are trailing. In an hour, these leads will convert into a majority for the Congress in Uttarakhand, and it will get a majority in Punjab as well.”

Uttarakhand is known for its anti-incumbency factor which doesn’t let any party retain power for consecutive terms since its formation in 2000. The Congress under Harish Rawat is hoping to gain from this factor. However, neither the BJP nor the Congress have declared their chief ministerial candidates until now.
