Volleyball star shares his inspiring journey to success

“I am taking this session as an opportunity to interact with the university students as all of you have a lot to contribute to the society,” said Mr. Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Assam’s only International Volleyball player, on 17th January 2021, when he interacted with Bennett University’s Sports Committee.

He talked about how sportsman life can be divided into three parts, which are: dreaming, achieving, and making memories.

Giving his own example, he said, “I belonged to a small town called Tezpur in Assam and I was not very privileged. My coach had one dream, to train a kid who could later represent North East in the Indian team. That is when I started dreaming.”

He first got a chance to represent the Indian team in Asian Youth Volleyball Championship in 1996, where he represented four states and was captain in three of them, he also won many medals.

“I could not believe I was representing four different states- Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. That is when I started achieving,” he expressed.

After retirement he went back to Assam and saw a team of underprivileged boys who did not have a ball to play the sport. He wanted to give back to the society and that is how Rangoni Youth Foundation was formed, which now runs 56 volleyball training centers across 19 districts across the state.

“Post retirement was a turning point in my life,” he said.

His efforts have helped children from poor background to potentially shape their destiny by excelling in the game and making Assam a volleyball hotspot. He is now an active member of society who tries to train the needy students to promote sporting culture.

In the interactive session, apart from talking about his experiences, he gave tips, told certain exercises, and highlighted how important teamwork is. “Team is more important rather than the individual,” he said. He also answered many questions that the students had.
