'Kiki's Delivery Service': An Anime Review

By Sanskriti Dixit

Enter magic. Enter the world of Studio Ghibli.

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by Studio Ghibli, Kiki’s Delivery Service is a charming and delightful film adapted from the 1985 novel ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’ written by Eiko Kadono. The movie follows a young witch named Kiki, who must leave home at the age of 13 and spend a year alone in a new town, as is a custom for witches.

Kiki’s only skill is flying on a broomstick and she uses it to start a delivery service, delivering goods around town and making friends. With her, is her companion- a black cat named Jiji. And together they find a town across the ocean to start their journey.

What makes Kiki’s Delivery Service so enjoyable is its warm and whimsical atmosphere. The movie features gorgeous hand drawn animation that brings the movie to life, from the bustling streets of the town to the lush forest that surrounds. The characters are well written, with each displaying a unique and natural personality. Kiki, with her kind and brave heart and Jiji, with his occasional comic relief.

Kiki’s Delivery Service explores themes of independence and self-discovery as Kiki navigates through her brand new life, finding and over-coming hurdles along the way. The struggles help connect the audience to the characters and love them more. Throughout her journey, Kiki learns the importance of hard work, friendship and following your dreams.

The movie also features musical masterpieces by Joe Hisaishi. (if that doesn’t persuade you to watch it, I don’t know what will)

So, if you’re looking for a soothing movie to watch, Kiki’s Delivery Service is the one for you.
