Venus is the second planet from the sun and is the closest planet to Earth. It is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty, Venus. Venus is similar in size and composition to Earth but is much hotter and inhospitable to life.
The planet's atmosphere is composed mainly of carbon dioxide, with clouds of sulfuric acid and other toxic gases. These clouds completely cover the planet and create a thick atmosphere that traps heat, making Venus the hottest planet in the solar system. The surface temperature on Venus is hot enough to melt lead, with temperatures reaching up to 864 degrees Fahrenheit (462 degrees Celsius).
Venus has a rocky surface that is heavily cratered, but it also has many volcanoes, mountains, and vast plains. One of the most prominent features on Venus's surface is the massive volcano calledMaat Mons , which is 8.8 miles (14 kilometers) high. Venus also has an extensive system of canyons and valleys, including the longest canyon in the solar system, called the Maxwell Montes .
Venus rotates very slowly, taking 243 Earth days to complete one rotation. Surprisingly, Venus rotates in the opposite direction to most other planets in the solar system, meaning that its day is longer than its year.
