Team Laser won the on-campus round of Hult Prize 2020 organized at Bennett University on Thursday. The first runner up was INDOFY by Ankit Agarwal followed by Aura by Anushka Garg. A total of nine teams were shortlisted for the on-campus round from an initial pool of more than 70 applications.

Team Laser, led by Rajat Lohan with Dhruv Pasari and Karan Singh as its members, worked on an idea to ease waste management problems in the country. All three of them are first year engineering students from the university. The first runner up was INDOFY by Ankit Agarwal followed by Aura by Anushka Garg.

The Hult Prize is an annual competition that outsources ideas from students by providing them a pressing social issue to solve. The theme if this year’s competition was ‘Sustainability’.

The teams spent months brainstorming ideas of startups that have the potential to drive a change and solve an impending crisis. Kalindi, member of team Utthan, said, “Our idea is to solve the issue of E-waste management with the help of reverse logistics. The idea looks at collecting waste from people and organisations to find a suitable way of disposal.”

“We are looking to bring handicrafts to the mass market,” said Parikshit Bhargava from team Akshay. “We wish to be able to make handicrafts available to a larger set of audience and hopefully customize them according to what our customers want,” he said.

The panel of judges included Mr Atul Tripathi, CEO, Unieako and Shalini Goyal Bhalla, Founder, WOMENforINDIA along with members from the Centre for Innnovation and Entrepreneurship, Bennett University and professors from different courses.

“The pitches we have heard so far are good and the students fare better than most other colleges. But, they lack the technological and prototyping requirements of a good pitch,” said Mr Tripathi. Uniqeako was also sponsoring the event and helped provide recycled material in the form of certificates and badges keeping up with the theme of this year’s competition.

Teams qualifying the university rounds will attend the regional rounds which are to be held in either Mumbai or Singapore. The finals are set to be held at the United Nations in September 2020.
