Bennett University’s Official Debating and Literary Club Cerebrum organised a slam poetry competition - The World in Words - on Tuesday, April 11, 2023. The competition saw participants recite self-written poems on four different themes.

The themes were decided to keep in compliance with this year’s G20 theme - Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. The themes were: Name and Identity, A Letter to Tomorrow, Race for Representation and The Comfort of Home. “We questioned this year’s G20 theme while we were researching. Are One world, One family, and One future possible? Is it a race for representation for everyone? We are trying to question the existence of gaps between the themes,” said Cerebrum head Kushagra Joshi.

Several participants came up with different interpretations of the given themes. Sanksriti, a participant came up with the interpretation of a woman facing a war during the Nazi regime as part of the theme “Name and Identity”. Similarly, Pragya Singh, a IInd Semester B.A.J.M.C student recited her poem called “Muse is My Home” on the theme: “The Comfort Of My Home”. “Reciting it in front of such a learned audience was a phenomenal experience,” she said.

“The theme I appreciated the most was “The Comfort of Home,” some of the pieces were beautifully crafted and Ananya’s piece especially reminded me of my home the most,” said Vanisha Rajesh Singh, a member of Cerebrum’s core team.

According to Shubh Bhardwaj, head of debating, the podium was decorated in yellow and orange lights instead of white lights to create a suitable atmosphere for the participants to recite their poems.

Cerebrum’s main objective through the event is to let people know that poetry is the best way to express our opinion on the biggest issues of the world and that it can be used as a weapon for solutions to their problems. The winners and prizes of the slam poetry competition will be announced on April 18, during a group discussion event organised by Cerebrum.
