Culture, power meet on Uphoria Day 2 to create excitement
By Simran Jha

On 15th February 2019, the second day of the annual fest Uphoria, Bennett University woke up to the powerful fusion of blues and indie classical music playing loud on the fields.

The second day of Uphoria was mostly reserved for cultural events by the musical society, Advaita and the two dance clubs, Spic Macay and Verve. With events like Battle of the Bands, solo singing competition, western group dance competition, the air was full of energy and tempo, adding to the excitement of Uphoria.

The day started with the Battle of the Bands where bands from colleges like Zakir Hussain College, Delhi, IIT Delhi, Ramjas College, Delhi and AAFT, Noida, among others competed against each other with their covers of famous songs and original compositions. As a surprise element, the judge of the event, Navneet performed for the audience before announcing the results.

The audience grooved along to the power packed fusion of jazz, blues and Malayalam pop music, an original composition by Kolama Band from Zakir Hussain College, Delhi University, the clear winner of the competition.

“This was our second live experience and as a new band, we don’t expect much from the audience except that they enjoy what we present. We enjoyed performing here and I personally love the vibes of this college and the students. Such energy and enthusiasm, that too in the morning is really rare and commendable. I hope we come back next year with better compositions and take the winner’s seat again,” said Ashwin Thomas, lead singer of Kolama Band.

After Battle of the Bands, it was time for Taraana (solo), a solo singing competition put up by club Advaita where students from Bennett University and colleges from all around Delhi and the NCR took part. With some soulful performances by Abhishkar from Zakir Hussain College, and Tuset from Galgotias College, Greater Noida, there were performances that had the audience on its feet grooving to the lilting music. “It was really good singing here; I did not expect such a huge crowd and that too such a responsive one! The management here has done a great job putting this fest up, and it is all visible as it is unfolding itself. I would love to stay after the competition and be a part of this fest,” said Tuset from Galgotias college.

While Advaita had the audience members tapping their feet to the rhythm, Verve was planning to get them dancing to the sound check tunes before Frolic and Fight, the western group dance competition. The sound check was like an impromptu dance party for the students and the participating teams. The competition saw teams from Maharaja Agrasen college, Lady Irwin College, Institute of Home Economics and PGDAV facing off in a tough contest against each other to win the cash prize.

The energy and power that every group had was commendable and left the judges in awe. “We woke up in the morning and travelled two and a half hours to reach here from Delhi, but the moment we were on the stage, it felt as if it was all worth it. The competition is tough, and the teams were unique in themselves, it was fun performing here,” said Aditya Sharma from team spunk, PGDAV.

Adding to the excitement were the food stalls from all the big names in the catering business in Delhi. Students were seen dancing, singing and enjoying their food, all at once. “When I first heard about this fest, I was not really sure, but thought of giving it a try and that was a good decision for me because missing such a wonderful fest would be a sin,” said Reshabh Sahu from SRM IST, Ghaziabad. Sahu was here to enjoy the fest on Day 1, but seeing the events and the schedule, decided to attend all three days of the fest.
