By Mansi Sharma

The Josh Talks team visited Bennett University as a part of their newly launched project- Know your Rights in association with Vivel. They talked about gender issues and fundamental rights of the people. They conducted fun filled activities and mainly focused on the legal rights of women.

Aashna Chaprana, a content creator and trainer from the Josh talks team conducted a workshop #AbSamjhautaNahi and informed the students about their fundamental rights. Their goal is to help youth find and develop their sense of purpose and equip students with the knowledge of their legal rights and bring about a change in the mindsets of the society.

Keeping in mind that gender and identity are not corelated. Aashna Chaprana said, “Gender Identity is how you in your head think about yourself and it’s the chemistry that composes you”.

All the cases which were discussed were gender centric. Cases like Mathura Das trial which helped amend the Criminal law Act, 1993, Rupan Doel Bajaj case which was the first ever sexual harassment case reported, led to the change in the definition of the modesty of women, Bharvi Devi case became a catalyst for the Vishakha guidelines on the basis of Sexual Harassment of women at workplace and another example was Nirbhaya case which lead to the amendment of Juvenile Justice Act, 2000.

There was an informative discussion on the LGBTQIA and their state in our country. She said, “This community deservers to have equal rights and when people support this community, they became a part of it and are known as ‘allied’.

She also talked about the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) which is a mandatory committee in every company to resolve sexual harassment cases. She said.” Incidents of Sexual harassment at workplace can be reported within three months of its occurrence”.

Cases of sexual harassment can also happen with men and it is important to discuss it at individual level. She added, “At an individual level we should become sensitive to both genders”.

Things to keep in mind while registering an FIR:

  • Date and time
  • Location
  • Description of the culprit
  • Exact information (not exaggerated)
  • Consistency in testimony
  • Must be recorded in first person
  • Must read before signing
At the commencement of the session irrespective of the gender, every person knew about their rights and pledged to be the Equality Warriors.
