By Samriddhi Bisht
Congress ’s Harish Rawat , one of the former chief ministers from Uttarakhand , has lost his Lalkuwa seat by a margin of nearly 16,432 votes, according to the data available on the Election Commission of India website.
Conceding his defeat, the veteran Congress leader tweeted, "Only a formal announcement of my electoral defeat from the constituency is pending. I apologize to the people of Lalkuan area, which includes all the areas of Bindukhatta, Bareilly road, that I could not earn their trust and the election promises I made to them”.
He added, “People of Lalkuan have chosen a better candidate than me. Many congratulations to him and the candidate selected by them and my best wishes for the future”.
The political leader who has a five-decade-old political career has lost to theBJP candidate, Mohan Singh Bisht . Rawat who was earlier confident of his victory and has served the state as a chief minister is now seems to be knocked out. Earlier in the day, Rawat sounded confident of his party’s victory in the state. He had said, "I am confident of the victory of Congress in Uttarakhand. Everything will be clear in the next 2-3 hours. I have faith in the people of the state. I believe Congress will get close to 48 seats."
Rawat was initially named to fight elections from the Ramnagar seat but was later shifted to Lalkuwa. At the same time, the BJP too incidentally shifted Mohan Singh Bisht to Lalkuwa making the battle tough.
