The local government school in the village of Bhirondi in Greater Noida has seen a considerable increase in enrolments over the last few years. In 2013, the school had only 13 students but now has 117 students who receive quality education.

The school, like 15 others of its kind, has been adopted by Indigo Airlines under the Indigo Reach project and has been transformed with the help of the SRF Foundation, working to provide quality education to the less privileged.

“In 2013, the school did not have enough teachers to keep it running. As the number of teachers increased, more students started enrolling,” said Headmaster Ashok Sharma. He said that the changes brought about after the intervention of the foundation has been the major driver for students to attend school.

“The science lab and the Indigo Smart Bus are the main attractions for the students. “We too are able to provide a better quality of education to our students after the upgradation of infrastructure,” he said.

Apart from the academic infrastructure, the provision of basic amenities like clean and usable toilets has been a driving factor for the enrolment of more number of girls. Komal, a student of Class 5, enrolled herself into the school a year ago. “My parents were convinced about sending me to school only after they were happy with the facilities here. The new toilets have made things very easy for us,” she said.

However, the toilets are not a just motivator for the students but also for the teachers. The school now has more women teachers, who say teaching the students have been made easy especially when they do not have to worry about basic amenities.

Shweta Srivastava, a primary school teacher, said, “When the basics are taken care of, we are free to do our best. There has been a change in mindset after the renovation. There is no panic among the staff and the parents are sure their child is getting proper education.”

SRF Foundation has helped the school with infrastructural and academic requirements to help them reach a level where they have the same opportunities as every other child. Through the foundation, the students now have a fully equipped science and computer labs, libraries and playgrounds to ensure a suitable teaching environment.
