Students of Bennett University had the opportunity to engage in an interactive session with the cast and crew of the upcomingBollywood film Haq . The event featured renowned actress Yami Gautam , debutante Vartika Singh and the movie’s director Suparn Verma who shared their insights about the movie and their creative experiences
in Bollywood with the students. Dhiraj Singh, deputy dean of Times School of Media, moderated the conversation.
Based on the landmark Shah Bano case and the Supreme Court ’s 1985 judgment that changed the course of Indian political history, Haq explores themes of religion, law, alimony, and women’s rights.
When asked about her reaction on reading Haq’s script for the first time,Yami Gautam said “Whenever I read a script, I read as an artist and as an audience together. I don't separate the two, as sometimes a role can be great for you but not from the audience's perspective. When I first read the script of Haq, I thought it was a such a powerful script and the role that I was to play was so impactful and wholesome.”.
Director Suparn Verma in-turn discussed the extensive research that went into the making of the film. He shared how his team delved deep into the functioning of the sessions court, high court and Supreme Court that was
required to make Haq as authentic as possible.
Yami also reflected on her approach to film-making. “I am a believer in home work and research, I am believer in working really hard, and working hand in hand with my director. I think that is really important, that the actor and director need to be on the same length as they can't be making two different films".
She added that as an actor whenever you portray a new character on screen, it is really important to understand the emotional depth and intelligence of that character even before mastering the physical aspects that the role requires.
The students in attendance actively participated in the session by asking questions from the film’s cast. Arnav Kapse, a first-year mass media student at Bennett shared his experience of interacting with the team and said- “My biggest learning from the session was to never hold back from asking essential questions during an event no matter how big of a star is sitting in front of you”.
The event was held on Thursday, 4th November at ITC Maurya hotel in New Delhi with students from Times School of Media and the Law School of Bennett University in attendance.
