Lines of art: BU celebrates Pongal by designing Kolam

Rivaaz, the cultural club ofBennett University , organised an online kolam making event to celebrate the harvest festival of Pongal and allowed the students to participate in the festivity. The event culminated on January 17 midnight.
The participants were required to design a kolam using rice flour, chalk powder or any colour powder suiting their design.
Kolam artworks hold a special significance in the Tamil culture. The word kolam in Tamil means form and beauty. It is considered as a symbol of auspiciousness and divinity. Traditionally, kolam is made with rice-powder along with banana leaves.
Avni Chadha, Secretary of Rivaaz, said, “It was not an easy task to conduct such type of events online. To celebrate the spirit of togetherness as Bennettians hail from different parts of the country, such events are being conducted.”
The people in Tamil Nadu come together and have grand celebrations onPongal , which include lots of good food and family time. Pongal is known as Pedda Panduga in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It corresponds with another harvest festival, Makar Sankranti, which is celebrated specifically in North India. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pongal, like many other Indian festivals, became an online celebration for those who were away from their families.
