Artisans from all across India at Dilli Hatt, INA

The concept of ‘Dilli Hatt
A variety of artisans from states all across India come to sell their handicrafts at Dilli Hatt, INA which is located in South Delhi. There are a total of 108 stalls in the Hatt providing employment to hundreds of workers. Items of home décor, clothing apparel like shawls, sarees, suits and mufflers, artificial jewellery are some of the popular goods being hold at the Hatt which resembles a rural market.
The bazzar is currently under the Delhi Tourism ministry which allots stalls free of cost to workers for a nominal period of 15 days after which rotation occurs.

Financial Independence for Women workers
At Dilli Hatt, INA various women have set up independent stalls in order to earn their livelihood. One such worker Deepwali said-“For a year I have been selling silver jewelry at Dilli Hatt which is made in Chandni Chowk itself. I was a homemaker before this but now I am able to earn up to Rs.50,000 each month, which helps me provide for my children better. Other women who have set up their stalls before me earn about a lakh at Dilli Hatt,INA. Currently as the new year is approaching our business is doing well and many customers are coming here.”

“My mother and maasi were forced to leave their homes in Manipur due to the recent riots that erupted there. To sustain we have set up a stall here in Dilli Hatt for 15 days where we sell clothes weaved by my mom for babies up to 3 months” said Anuradha from Manipur.

Recovery of trade after Covid-19 pandemic
The craft sector had suffered a huge setback during Covid-19. Places like Delhi Hatt were shut down due to complete lockdown, live craft events stopped abruptly and even wholesalers stopped buying handicrafts from artisans. Dayabhai Allabai Mangaria a worker from Bijori district, Gujarat present at Dilli Hatt,INA recalled-“For the 2 years of Covid-19 I used to sit at my home unemployed weaving woolen shawls. It was indeed a very challenging time. However, trade is recovering now and customers keep coming.”
