Gripping chess matches: OP Jindal triumphs at Sportikon

The third day of Sportikon brought forth intense battles in the chess competition, with universities showcasing their strategic prowess in the 4v4 format. The day ended with OP Jindal on top, Amity placing second place and Bennett being the second runner up.

The quarter-finals commenced with Amity A team securing a decisive victory over UPES-1 with a scoreline of 3-0. Meanwhile, OP Jindal dominated Bennett's C team, securing a clean sweep at 4-0. Bennett's A team emerged victorious against their B team counterparts with a resounding 4-0 win. Sharda clinched a tight victory against Amity's B team with a score of 2.5-1.5.

Moving into the semi-finals, Amity's A team continued their winning streak, overpowering Sharda with a flawless 4-0 victory. On the other side, OP Jindal and Bennett's A team found themselves deadlocked at 2-2 after the regular matches. The subsequent tiebreaker, a rapid 5-minute game, ended in yet another draw with both teams at 2-2. The tension escalated in the second tiebreaker, but OP Jindal emerged triumphant with a 3-1 victory, securing their spot in the finals.

The battle for the third-place position witnessed Bennett's A team prevailing over Sharda with a convincing 3-1 win. In the much-anticipated finals, OP Jindal faced off against Amity's A team. The match proved to be a fierce contest, with OP Jindal ultimately claiming victory with a scoreline of 2.5-1.5.

Amity's captain, Abhijith U, expressed his sentiments on the tournament, stating, "Sportikon went well for us, and I'm glad to see chess gaining recognition in university tournaments. The team played great." OP Jindal's captain, Nihshank Upadhyay, shared his excitement, saying, "The team is feeling great, Sportikon went well for us. I'm happy we won, and the team played exceptionally." Bennett's captain, Chaitanya Kharya, remained optimistic, commenting, "We put up some good competition this time, I hope we win next time.”


Udlakshaya Raina, the winning table for OP Jindal, reflected on their nearly drawn match, stating, "I almost drew it but had a gut feeling to keep going for the team, I feel great being the winning table."

The chess competition at Sportikon showcased the intellectual intensity of the participating teams, highlighting the growing recognition of chess in university tournaments. The players exhibited exceptional skill and sportsmanship, making the chess segment of Sportikon Day 3 an unforgettable event.
