The International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Children: Influencing Societies, Human Values and Governance was held at Times School of Media on the 10th and 11th of September. The conference was an excellent opportunity for debate and discussion among dignitaries, scholars and experts from both India and abroad. ICAIC is particularly important as TSOM started as a research project backed by ICSSR about digital empowerment of children. At the conclusion of the conference, Ms. Arushi Gambhir and Ms. Archana Giri were awarded the two best presentation prizes for papers titled, “The Default Child: Disability Representation in AI-Generated Images of Childhood in the Classroom.” and “Beyond Points & Badges: Integrating AI and Gamification to Enhance Metacognitive Regulation and Performance in Middle School Science” respectively.

The Conference was convened by Dr. Moina Khan (Associate Professor, TSOM), Dr. Anubhav Mathur (Associate Professor, TSOM) and Dr. Divya Jha (Associate Professor, TSOM). The event was supported by Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) and YANA Hospitals. The opening remarks of the conference were delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Sumit Narula, Dean, TSOM and Dr. Raj Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Bennett University. Their remarks set the context for all the sessions of the conference to follow. Prof. (Dr.) Charru Malhotra, faculty at Indian Institute of Public Administration, was the keynote speaker on the first day of the conference. Prof. Malhotra came to the dais and delivered a rousing speech that argued for a better future involving AI. She urged the audience to look at these changing times as an opportunity to make this country more educated and inclusive.

Dr. Neelam Rani, an alumna from IIM Ahmedabad and Faculty at IIM Shillong, also delivered a thought-provoking speech about the harmful dependency that children are starting to develop towards Artificial Intelligence. Additionally, Dr. Amanda Levido, curriculum consultant for the Media Arts strand of the Australian Curriculum, joined in for the discussion online. Dr. Levido helped the audiences understand the current scenario regarding AI and Education.

The opening session was followed by paper presentations by academicians and scholars across the globe. These presentations were divided by several sub-topics from the overarching theme of AI and children. Academicians from both India and abroad presented their work in front of Session Chairs. The Public Health Coalition for Global Impact and IBM also conducted workshops for the participants on the second day of the conference. The workshop was succeeded by the Valedictorian Ceremony, where the best presenters were awarded. The conference reached its conclusion with a vote of thanks by Dr. Divya Jha, Associate Professor, TSOM on the second and closing day of the conference.
