The world is large, you will find your place. Have you heard this line? You probably have. Anytime I mention that I feel like I don’t belong people rush to comfort me, they tell me that it’s not true and that I am important and belong. They tell me I will find my place in the world, my place in a group.
Why? Why do people first invalidate how I feel without knowing the reason why I feel the way I do? You have probably had the same reaction when you mention you don’t have many friends, or you don’t connect with people. You can know many people, but they don’t have to be your friends, you can talk to people for hours and not build a connection.
We are built based on our experiences and how we respond to the situations we are put in. We can't expect two different people to be the same.
The general idea of belonging is making a connection with people who are like you. It’s hard to find people to connect with, there are multiple levels on which two people can interact and connect but connecting with someone on multiple levels is highly unlikely. So, it is impossible to bea part of something that is meant for you, and that is okay. You do not have to mould yourself to be the final piece of a puzzle, you can be the final image all on your own and for yourself.
But let me give you an alternate ending.
What if you’re not perfect?
The usual answer is ‘Obviously I’m not perfect! Who even is?’
We all know we aren’t perfect, so I suggest, why not take a leap of faith! Try and connect with someone different from you, someone you never really considered connecting with.
What is the worst that could happen? You either make a friend and unlock a different side of yourself or you meet someone new, even if you don’t make a connection.
You don’t have to be the final puzzle piece, be your own final art piece but there is nothing wrong with being surrounded by different types of art.
