Welcome to Stars and Stripes, your one-stop blog for everything football. In this blog, I update you on what has happened during the week in football and also give my opinion on one particular football-related topic every week. Let’s Football!!
This week’s theme isWorld Cup .
Let’s start with football this week. This week saw the return of international football for the first time after theWorld Cup last year. European countries battled it out for Qualification to Euro 2024. England beat Italy 2-0 and redeemed their Euro 2020 final loss. France destroyed the Netherlands 4-0 with the newly given captain armband Kylian Mbappe scoring two goals and providing an assist. Ronaldo and Messi both scored a free-kick to help their teams win with ease. The Goats. Morocco beat Brazil 2-1 to continue their tremendous underdog form from the World Cup.
Since it is an international break, choosing World Cup as this week's theme would be fitting. World Cups are the ultimate tournament of the ultimate game. They bring out culture in every country they are hosted in. They are special for man fans and occasional viewers in general as they are hosted every four years. These are my picks for the Top 3 World Cups of all time. The first on my list would be the most recent one in Qatar in 2022. Every match was a different story in itself. This World Cup saw a lot of Upsets like Saudi Arabia beatingArgentina , Morocco reaching the Semis and Teams like Brazil and Spain being knocked out early. It also saw a lot of iconic managers resigning or being sacked. In the end, was a fairy tale ending to a very unpredictable tournament with one of the best finals ever played between France and Argentina . Messi winning his first world cup. The cherry on top of the cake. The 2014 world cup in Brazil would be second on my list. This was the first world cup that I watched which also made me fall in love with football. This saw a lot of iconic goals such as Van Persie’s iconic header vs Spain and Mario Gotze’s iconic goal vs Argentina in the final. I still remember watching that as a Messi fan and being upset for the whole week. This World Cup also saw the rise of young footballers that defined the last decade of football. James Rodriguez, Neymar, Paul Pogba , Thomas Muller and more. The third and last one would be the 2006 world cup in Germany which reminds everyone of Zidane’s famous headbutt. He also scored a panenka in the final against Italy . But in the end, Italy deservingly won it all.
That is all for this week, I’ll meet you next week with the weekly roundup and a new topic. Bye!
