The ‘Elephant Whisperers’ is very much discussed these days as it has won the best documentary short film at the Oscars 2023. The story and the tagline themselves cry out for the attention of the audience.

The story revolves around a couple named Bellie and Bomman, whose job is to take care of orphaned and abandoned baby elephants. Bomman has been carrying forward the tradition of being an elephant caretaker after his father died. The director, Kartiki Gonsalves, beautifully pictured this couple of South India who has devoted everything in their life for a baby elephant named ‘Raghu'.

Bellie and Bomman share their experience of raising baby elephants and understanding the nature of the little tuskers in the forests of Tamil Nadu. The forest department finds Bomman and Bellie as its go-to caretakers for any baby elephant in a bad condition. They have made the couple in charge of another baby elephant named ‘Ammu’. Bellie considers feeding an elephant to be like feeding a human baby, which is why she is now called the ‘mother of elephants’ among the tribals of the forest. After losing enough in our life, she found a family with Bomman, and two baby elephants Raghu and Ammu of seven and three years respectively. They want their future generations to learn from them and carry forward the tradition of elephant caretakers.

This short documentary is worth watching as it has changed the perspective of people towards elephants as a wild and dangerous animals however after watching ‘Elephant Whisperers’, I was surprised to know that elephants are truly emotional and loving animals and what it takes to raise them in tough situations. I would love to recommend the film as a must-watch to everyone with a Netflix connection.
