To any person not aware of the grandeur of a Birkin, it will come across as a regular bag. Calling a Birkin bag just a bag is an insult in itself. The question arises in the minds of people, how is this bag different from any other regular bag or even any other luxury brand? Well to answer that, we’ll first have to dive into how the bag came to be as how we see it today.
The story of the Birkin started with a flight flying from France to London. The year was 1983, Parisian singer-actressJane Birkin was travelling with her beloved wicker basket bag. While there are many versions of how the story proceeds, they all revolve around the spilling of her wicker basket bag’s content, including her Hermès diary. Luckily for Jane Birkin , and the entire fashion world, on the same Air France flight was seated the then artistic Chief Executive of Hermès, Jean-Louise Dumas . Upon seeing the frustration on Jane’s face after the incident, Dumas introduced himself to her and suggested that she should find a bag with pockets to accommodate all her belongings. The actress replied that if the day Hermès made a large everyday bag that could hold all the items a busy mother carried, she would give up her signature oversized basket in its favour. Jane then went on to explain how hard it was to find a spacious, secure, and stylish bag that she liked. This struggle to find the perfect bag made Dumas start sketching samples of bags on the back of an aeroplane sickness bag. The very first few sketches of the Birkin bag we see today were drawn while keeping the feedback from Birkin in mind. Who would’ve thought that one of the greatest bags in the history of fashion lore would have started from a sick bag?
A year later, in 1984, the first-ever Birkin bag made its debut into the fashion world. It has been almost 40 years since the first Birkin and Hermès has never looked back. The desire to own a Hermès Birkin is a dream for many but a luxury only a few can afford. The Hermès Birkin continues to hold the crown amongst all the other luxury handbags.
