Bennett Dialogue: Explores Western media narrative of the Russia-Ukraine war
Do we actually just watch, read or listen to the news without paying attention to the back story? just to get back on the right track, Times School of Media and Centre for Media Technology organized second edition of Bennett Dialogues titled "Unpacking the Russia-Ukraine Conflict & Western Media Narrative on It" on October 16. The session featured Jozef Schutzman, an American-born cross-cultural analyst, media commentator, and naturalised Russian citizen. He is the co-founder and host of 'Russia Upclose’, aMoscow-based podcast. His work focuses on dismantling Western media narratives and fostering multipolar dialogue by connecting everyday realities in Russia
with broader shifts in global power. He spoke in conversation with Zakka Jacob, Managing Editor of Times Now.
The session emphasized on how western media carves out narratives in portraying conflicts, political interests which then influences international events. Schutzman through an example of Russian President Vladimir Putin as a dictator and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a victim, urging students to critically analyze how such binaries are built upon.

The discussion sparked an intriguing thought for young reporters: What is the point at which reporting becomes bigger than merely a description of things, and more about the way audiences interpret them? The importance of challenging and questioning dominant narratives, identifying sources of claims, differentiating between verified facts and political messaging/commentary were highlighted.

The students also had a chance to interact with speakers through a Q/A session where they asked questions around international affairs, the media's portrayal of events and the role of journalists in news coverage of conflicts in which opposing sides tell
conflicting accounts of the same situation. For Media and Communication students, Bennett Dialogues offered a forum to consider the processes through which narratives are created, come into being, and happen to influence and shape public discourse across borders. It also highlighted the need to open up to ever-changing geopolitical scenarios, think critically and verify.

The discussion was designed to highlight the importance of students understanding the world beyond the headlines, by having a media professional and an international affairs commentator discuss their work. In an age of conflicting information and geopolitical tensions, challenging narratives while maintaining a grasp of facts is at the heart of good reporting.
